Students finished their TPR chart they began on Friday.
March 17
Students spent the day practicing how to take vital signs. We used Smokey, Buck, and NoName and the students were to record their TPR findings for each horse in a chart.
March 15
Began vital signs unit. Students watched short video demonstrating how to take the five major vital signs in a horse (temperature, pulse, respiration, capillary refill, dehydration). We then went out to the barn and I demonstrated how to do all of these on a live horse.
March 13
Students spent time going through the tack rooms at Locust Trace and looking for unsafe tack. They were to make a list of any unsafe equipment or tack they found and then gave an explanation of WHY that is unsafe and what the implications might be if the issue was not addressed. They were to turn this in before they left for the day.
March 6th
Students retook parts of tack quiz. Graded and discussed as a class. Grades were recorded.

Students read unsafe tack and tack cleaning articles and answered following questions:

1. List 5 things to look for when performing a safety tack check. For each one describe the potential dangers if the unsafe equipment is not addressed
2. Describe the purpose of a saddle’s tree.

3. When should your helmet be replaced?

Students need to complete Tasks 9 and 10 (from their task books). Task 9 should be at least two pages, including everything the task states. Task 10 should be at least a page. They should do these tasks on separate sheets of paper and turn into the turn in folder.

Students need to read the attached articles, “Golden Rules of Feeding”, “Choosing Feeders”, “Hay vs Straw”. Using the article “The Golden Rules of Feeding” students need to answer the following questions on a piece of paper:
- Rule number 3: What other characteristics of a horse should be taken into consideration when choosing a type of feed and the amount that should be fed?
- Rule number 5: Why would this cause a horse to have an upset stomach
- If you could add another rule to this list, what would it be?
- Wrap-Up: What do YOU feel is THE most important rule discussed in this article? Why?
